Why I teach this
I did not create this work from a textbook.
I know what it is to keep searching because the answers you have been given do not fully explain what you are living.
In my twenties, I was exhausted and inflamed. I was managing chronic pain, acne, digestive trouble, and periods that took me out. My body was falling apart, and the pain was stealing my joy.
At the same time, childhood trauma I had never processed came to the surface. I had gotten good at keeping it in a room with the door shut. Eventually, I could not pretend I was fine.
I am grateful for skilled doctors and for what medical care can do. I also learned how often the system leaves little room for the full story of a person's life. I needed care that could make room for the physical, emotional, spiritual, and relational parts of what I was living through.
I stopped refusing what my body was telling me. I said yes to herbalism, yoga, meditation, mentorship, and facing why I was hurting instead of carrying it alone. It was not fast, nor was it tidy.
That journey, physical, emotional, and spiritual all at once, is where the CALYPSO Healing Method® came from.
It is why I do not teach herbs as a list of remedies for a list of symptoms. A symptom matters, but so does the person experiencing it: their constitution, history, environment, relationships, patterns, medications, resources, and the life they are living.
That is the foundation beneath everything I teach. Thoughtful herbal care asks us to see the whole person, weigh what matters, and choose with care.

When we meet, we will revisit the most important teaching from those two modules, answer the questions that surfaced as you studied, and demonstrate (when relevant) the related lab together. Across 13 monthly sessions, we will move through all 26 modules with a steady rhythm of independent learning, live guidance, and practical application.

I'm Selima Iwilla Harleston Lust, a clinical herbalist, author, co-founder of Iwilla Remedy, and creator of the CALYPSO Healing Method®. I teach African American Herbalism at Spelman College, where I created the course, and serve as a Lead Herbalist Educator at Herbal Academy.

I am new to herbs. Will I feel out of place?
No. The first phase builds your foundation step by step, and lifetime access means you can revisit anything that needs more time.
How does the monthly live study rhythm work?
Beginning in January 2027, work through two modules before each monthly live session. Come ready with your questions. During the gathering, we will revisit the key teaching, connect it to practice, and demonstrate (when relevant) the related lab. Do I have to become a professional herbalist?
No. Some students come for their own healing or to support family and community. Others bring this work into an existing career or future practice. I teach clear scope, safety, and referral boundaries, and I cannot promise a job or income outcome.
What happens if I cannot attend a live call?
Live calls are recorded and added to your library so you can watch the replay when your schedule allows.
Does the program replace medical care?
No. Herbal Medicine for the Soul® is an educational program. You will learn to recognize contraindications, understand your scope, and know when licensed medical evaluation is the right next step.
